TCAT Shelbyville allocated CARES emergency grant aid to assist the largest number of affected students possible. Our institution ensured the population receiving payments met all documented USDOE requirements and were all required to transition to online learning due to COVID-19. All payees received notification of the payment, an overview of regulations related to the funding, and a statement indicating that acceptance of funding confirmed the student had a qualifying expense.

April 9, 2020

Dear TCAT Shelbyville Student,

I wish to start out by telling you how proud I am of you and how much I appreciate your patience as we have transitioned all instruction to an online platform.  We had hoped this would only last a week or two. Unfortunately, online instruction will continue until April 30, which means we will conclude our spring 2020 trimester without having the opportunity to bring you and your classmates back on campus.  Governor Lee has asked all state higher education institutions to adhere to the April 30th date.

If you were scheduled to graduate this trimester, I wish to assure you that your graduation plans are a top priority for us. As soon as we are permitted to allow students back on campus, you will be the first students we will work to bring back to complete final trimester projects and hands on assessments.

If you are a Practical Nursing student, I wish to assure you that your faculty and coordinator of Nursing are working with the state board of Nursing to determine the best practices for clinical time. We are doing our best to assure you can graduate on time. However, as national health leaders have stated, the virus will determine when it is safe to go on with our lives and our work.

If you are a student not in his or her final trimester, I request your continued diligence to your online studies and communication with your instructor. Please remember your instructor is doing all he or she can do to assure you are receiving effective instruction and skills. I have heard from many of them over these last three weeks and believe me when I say they want to get back on campus as soon as possible too.

For your planning purposes, these are the revised dates for the summer 2020 trimester:

Summer 2020 classes will begin for all preparatory programs on Monday, May 18 (not May 4, as previously posted).
To make up for the time missed during the week of May 4 and the week of May 11, the week of June 22 - 26 will be an instructional week, not a student break week as currently noted on our academic calendar. Your instructor will also add time to each day to make up for the time missed during the week of May 11.
The week of June 29 - July 2 will be a student break week.
Friday, July 3 is a holiday for everyone.
Summer 2020 term will conclude on Wednesday, August 26 for all supplemental and preparatory classes.

Please do all you can to finish strong this trimester and remember the skills you are learning online will be very valuable to you once you get back in the lab or when you enter the workforce.

The faculty and staff at TCAT Shelbyville are here if you need us.  Please continue to check your email for important resources that can help you while you go through this unprecedented event.

#TCATShelbyvilleStrong

Please take care and be safe,

President Monks

“March 15, 2020

Key Takeaway: Spring break has been extended; campus remains open for support; faculty are looking at alternate delivery methods for students.

While all TCAT -----  campuses are remaining open to serve our students, we are on extended spring break from classes. While this is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation that may change, at this time classes will resume March 23, 2020.

The health of our students, faculty and  staff and your families are our top priority – along with our mission of Student Success and Workforce Development. Although we have not experienced any active Coronavirus cases on any of our campuses and the risk level in our communities remains low, we will continue to take steps that are consistent with local and state health guidance to reduce risks and protect our community. These steps include hospital-grade cleaning of all of our campus areas.

Faculty members are diligently preparing to move some course components online or planning alternate delivery methods. However, as a technical college,  this is not practical for all courses or programs. Additionally, many of our students do not have internet access to continue their studies through online education. Therefore we are also considering other methods of education.

As we look to the coming weeks, it will be time to think of our mission of Student Success and Workforce Development – and we may be called upon to roll up our sleeves and get to work in a new and challenging way to keep our communities moving forward. I have confidence that we can do this and that we will succeed.
