After students learn to weld in the lab their instructor, Tim Holder, challenges them to weld out of position in jigs they fabricate to resemble a real world working environment. Welders are subject to weld out of position everyday so in the welding technology class they get the experience to help them in different positions. Welders also have to be ambidextrous in their welding abilities, welding students train for this in SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW as well as being able to use a cutting torch with both hands.
