Stories @ TCAT

The Machine Tool Technology program along with the Welding program at TCAT Shelbyville manufactured a custom engraved gate for the H.V. Griffin Park. The Leadership Bedford Class of 2016 will present the gate on Tuesday, July 26 at 6 pm at the park.

The Welding Technology students had to determine how much material was needed for the gate frame and engraved sheets by drawing up blueprints for the project. The welders first had to cut the 2” x 4” aluminum rectangle tubing to correct size. The aluminum tubing was welded using the GTAW (tig welding) with aluminum filler rod. The students made sure that each weldment had 110% penetration along with keeping the gate square during the welding process.

The Machine Tool Technology students used FeatureCAM to create programs to engrave the sponsors’ names. The programs were executed on the Hass VF-2.  Students then deburred each letter for every name.  The final process was to bring the gate to a high polish finish using a buffing wheel.

The engraved pieces from Machine Tool Technology were welded on the back side to form a solid panel that was then welded to the gate frame on the front. Welding and Machine Tool fabricated custom hinges and a gate clasp from raw aluminum and steel pieces to finish the project.
